Painting Ourselves Visible
The 2019 Treasure Tampa grant recipient is Art2Action Inc., a local Tampa non-profit, for Painting Ourselves Visible – A Mural by Aya Tarek in partnership with the City of Tampa Art Programs Division.
Art2Action is a group devoted to working with women artists, artists of color, queer or trans* artists, and creative allies in a myriad of arts genres. Art2Action will engage with world-renowned Egyptian painter and muralist, Aya Tarek. Guest artist Tarek will be in residence with Art2Action for a month, to create a new large-scale work, Painting Ourselves Visible, and participate in community engagement.
This live-painting art project will include free public events at partner venues, including engaging USF Students through a new Community-based Arts Practice’ course. The mural-reveal will be celebrated with a culminating Block Party at the mural site, featuring local Arab and American Hip Hop artists, along with national and international guests. The site of the mural is to be determined in partnership with the City of Tampa.
Aya Tarek
Aya Tarek has had works displayed from Cairo to Berlin to Sao Paolo to Portland, OR. Tarek is seen by many as the first serious street artist in Egypt. She has been featured in and produced several independent films and is an outspoken critic, using multiple art venues that center on graffiti to express her views and share them with others in public spaces. Aya Tarek stresses the importance of street art, especially in Egypt. She states, “The street is for everyone.” She considers herself to be an experimental artist and practices vast creative freedom in her work.
